- : Ah, they probably forgot that you want to run Word for Windows, no ?
-
- Thats the kind of statement that put the Amiga in the place it is
- today. "Oh, I don't need a fast CPU because I don't use that bulky
- OS that everyone else does... AmigaOS is magic - it just makes
- everything fast!!" What, has AmigaOS turned into the super OS? Turn
- your 68020/14 into an UltraSparc-II? I think not.
-
- How dare you sit here and spout out such an ignorant statement like
- that. "want to run Word for Windows"??? Bah. I hope you've noticed
- this but
-
- (1) Most games out for any OS right now require (as a base) more power
- than a 68040/40 can pump out. Wasn't the Amiga always the best games
- machine out? Now look at it... we have "Worms". Recycled material
- from the days that Psygnosis was king. Seems that games like "Worms"
- are on the downfall now... I'd like to see how Command & Conquor,
- Wing Commander 4, or Descent run on your 030/40 that you like to
- defend so much. Hell, SimCity2000 was all but crap on an 040,
- and Maxis has always put out good software for the Amiga. But I take
- it that you'd say that "well, their coding sucked. it wasn't the
- Amigas fault". Hmm.. so much I hear that now days... everyone's
- coding must suck then...
-
- (2) Your 030/40 is still going to have problems dealing with the
- increasing demands of larger and more colorful graphics. This isn't
- 1987 anymore - we aren't dealing with 320x200 16 color images. Try
- 640x480, 800x600, or even 1024x768 in 8-bit or deeper. My 040/25
- had problems dealing with frame after frame of 24-bit 800x600 data
- that I was throwing at it. Oh sorry, I forgot. You probably think
- that AGA is all anyone needs, so you'd never actually ever use 24-bit
-
- (3) Last time I checked, Final Writer itself wasn't much better than Word
- at speed. 40 page document, about 10 or 20 pictures, oh boy oh boy
- was it slow. But then, I guess your high school papers must be a lot
- shorter than what we do here in college... so perhaps an 030/40
- would be fine for your 2 page reports.
-
- (4) I guess nobody you know ever does anything else that needs a fast CPU
- such as archiving, image conversion, possibly rendering (like VRML
- objects out on the web... whoops, forgot. Amiga is the only "major"
- platform out w/o a VRML browser), and other misc speed critical jobs.
- And ya know, last time I checked, my hard drive interface seemed
- much much better after I dropped it into an 030 and then 040 system.
- (but then I guess if they weren't fast with an 020, then they must
- of sucked because the programmers didn't write the drivers is pure
- ASM, eh?)

- : >Why not a 68030/50 Mhz or (better) a 68040?
- :
- : Because of the price ? A 68030/50 is pretty expensive, an 68040 (or at
- : least an 68LC040) is cheaper. Doesn't mean that it can compete with
- : the price for the EC030.
- :
- : Besides, there is little difference between a 40MHz and 50MHz machine.
-
- Well, remember that the EC030 lacks any working MMU. Long ago I
- never thought I'd have any need for one, but when I wanted to use apps
- that need it, like Enforcer, VMM, or FastROM, or can use it to speed
- things up, like ShapeShifter, then I found the lack of one a real pain
- in the ass. And what if I want to use Unix? Can't do it w/o an MMU...
- Agreed, speed difference wise, the jump between 40MHz and 50MHz isn't
- much, but that MMU really does make a difference.
-
- Why not better, lets just drop the 680x0 line all together. Maybe if
- Escom got off their ass and did something, we could of had the
- beginnings of a PowerPC port of AmigaOS by now. Why do we want a 68030
- when a PPC 603 emulates 680x0 code faster than your 68EC030/40 can
- execute it? I can't figure it out. And native PPC apps will haul ass.
- After all, the PPC603 isn't much more expensive than a 68040 chip is, if
- not cheaper.
-
- BTW - a lack of AGA apps didn't stop people from getting A4000s when
- they first came out! True, you couldn't use your apps in 256 colors
- yet, but your 16 color apps sure did haul. Same goes with a PPC.
- You may not be able to get that speed tap using 680x0 apps, but the
- OS routines and included PPC WB software will be quick. And if I
- remember right, most add on cards run faster if the CPU itself is
- faster (holds true to SCSI interfaces, video cards, ect...), so a PPC
- chip will shine there. And when we do start seeing PPC apps, people
- will be glad they got a PPC machine instead of a 68EC030 one when
- they run their software as fast as a Pentium.
-
- So I ask one last time - why do you think Amigas shouldn't have anything
- better than a 68EC030/40? Please tell me, I am dying to know. If
- its so that all of the little kids can play games on a $400 machine, hey,
- let them either buy a used A1200 or go out and get a Playstation. Its
- time for the rest of us to move on.
-

- : >It's right only if they sell this machine with 4MB fast ram and a
- : >decent HD (say 540MB) at about $700-$800.
- :
- : Ah, now we come to the reason for your whining. You do not want to pay,
- : AT should give you everything for free. How could it be "ok" if it is
- : "shit" ?
- :
-
- Michael, I have to agree with you here. I think in this area this guy
- as his head up his 3rd-point of contact. He must be looking in the
- MacMall magizines at all of the 040 based Macs that Apple is trying to
- dump to get some extra $$. The 040 isn't a cheap chip, and neither
- is all of the R&D bills that Escom/AT is gonna rack up building a
- new 040 based machine from scratch.. An $800 machine isn't gonna do
- this.
-
- I also think this guy is a putz because an 040 based system with only
- 4MB of memory is a waste. And I don't even think people put 540MB in new
- computers anymore... not unless they are old/overstock machines that
- they are trying to dump...
